COURSES OFFERED:

TWO YEAR FASHION DESIGN COURSE

FIRST YEAR: (Certificate course)

Course times: Monday to Friday – 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.

Up to 20 students can be accommodated in this course. The training centre is currently equipped with industrial and domestic sewing machines and students are encouraged to become familiar in using both types. From 2011, students have been offered the opportunity to purchase their own domestic sewing machine. They take ownership of the machine at the beginning of the course and pay it off over the year that they are in training. They use their machine throughout training so that they become familiar with every aspect of it before they leave.

In this first year, a lot of emphasis is put on sample work before any article is attempted to be made so that a good quality article can be produced at the end of each section. Training is also given on the use of a block pattern and how to make changes to it to make up a design that is wanted i.e. taking a basic skirt pattern and learning how to flare it or make panels in it, or taking a basic shirt pattern and learning how to change a neck line, or lengthen a sleeve, etc. Articles that are made during the course range from kitchen and toilet sets, curtains, tableware, a school uniform and a tracksuit, shorts with a fly zip to a ladies skirt and shirt.

All fabrics needed to produce their final articles, and other stationery requirements are supplied by students.

Students have the option to leave at the end of the first year of study and will receive a certificate at their graduation showing what they have achieved throughout the year.

Contact Sharon or Mpume at Sizanani to find out the costs of the course, or visit our centre to see what we offer.

SECOND YEAR: (diploma course)

Course times: Monday to Friday – 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m

This course was introduced in 2010. Many of the students who have graduated from Sizanani over the years have enquired why a year’s course is not offered with training in pattern drafting, design and sewing of clothing like tailored outfits, formal gowns, etc., so this has now been addressed.

This course is tailored for those people who already know how to sew so students need to complete the first year course first before joining the design course. Training is given but students are also expected to work on their own bringing the completed work to the centre for marking and to receive their next assignment. This course can accommodate 15 students each year.

Text books, all fabrics needed to produce their final garments, and other stationery requirements are supplied by students.

Students will receive a diploma at their graduation showing what they have achieved throughout the year.

PART-TIME CLASSES, TWO YEARS:

Part-time classes were introduced in 2009 to enable students who may be employed to still be able to learn a sewing skill. Classes are held during the week and students can choose to attend one day a week or every day of the week for two hours a morning or they can join the Saturday morning classes. There has been a positive feedback from those who are attending the classes and it is hoped that this will grow from strength to strength.

Text books, all fabrics needed to produce their final garments, and other stationery requirements are supplied by students.

Course times: Monday to Friday 12pm – 2pm (any day of the week)

Saturday – 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.
